Masonry is the use of stone, clay, brick or concrete block and putting them together with mortar as part of a wall or building.
Mortar is the binding medium used in masonry construction. Masonry mortar consists of cement or lime, sand, and water. In nature, the resulting mixture is uniform. The most important aspects to consider while choosing masonry mortar are its strength, masonry’s colour and the loads placed on the structure.
There are two main types of masonry work, veneer and solid masonry. Veneer masonry is used for aesthetic purposes and solid masonry provides the base of support. Masonry helps the architect in the character, look and feel of the building’s structures.
Brick is the most popular material used for masonry which are known to be durable and has a classic look. The bricks used should be sound, hard and well burnt with uniform size, shape and colour. Bricks should not have cracks or flaws. The surface should be free from holes, grit or lumps of lime.
Generally, masonry can be used to construct or repair walls, partitions, arches, sewers and other structures.
